In short

  • Netflix said on November 3 that AI Discover is a new tab on its TV app, open at first to a small group of members.
  • The rollout starts in the US, for English-language users on supported TVs, and Netflix says more people will get it over the coming weeks.
  • The first feature starts from themes such as “Something Light,” “Scare Me” and “Quick Watches,” each previewed with a clip.
  • A “Tune Your Recommendations” button on each title lets a member keep a pick or ask Netflix not to recommend it again.
  • Netflix calls the tab its “test kitchen” and says some of what it tries may reach the main service.

Netflix said on Tuesday, November 3, that it has started testing AI Discover, a new tab on its TV app where members start from a mood or an occasion and narrow down from there. Only a small group has it at first. The rollout begins in the US, for English-language users on supported TVs, and Netflix says more people will get it over the coming weeks.

How the first version works

The first feature inside the tab is built around themes, each with its own preview clip. Some describe a feeling (“Something Light,” “Scare Me”), some an audience (“Family Movie Night”) and some the time available (“Quick Watches”). Others may draw on what is new or popular on the service, or on the member’s recent viewing. Picking a theme brings up matching titles, and narrower themes then appear. A choice called “Something Different” brings a fresh set.

Each title carries a “Tune Your Recommendations” button beside “Play” and “My List,” which can keep a recommendation or ask Netflix not to suggest it again. Netflix says AI helps create the themes and that it will explain the results along the way. It describes what sits underneath as “a new intelligence layer” that reacts in real time to what members tell it.

Netflix says members who have the feature will see “Discover,” with a red gem icon and a “New” label, in the top navigation on their TV.

Not the same as Netflix’s search beta

Netflix describes another discovery test in its Help Center, and neither page mentions the other. “A new way to search” is a limited, opt-in beta on iPhones and iPads, in which members type what they want in their own words; Netflix’s example is “Something funny and upbeat.” The two tests start from different places: one from a prompt or a typed phrase on a phone or tablet, the other from themes on a TV.

What the announcement does not say

The announcement leaves several things open. It does not name the supported TVs, give a date for other countries or languages, or say whether phones will get the tab. It also does not tie the test to a particular plan; our plan comparison lists what each Netflix tier cost in late October. The announcement points to a Help Center article for more, but that article showed us only a notice that AI Discover is not available in the country we read it from, so some of these details may be there.

One line limits how far a rejection reaches. Tell the tab a title is not for you, Netflix says, and “we’ll remember it in AI Discover.” The announcement does not say whether that carries over to the regular home screen.

Netflix presents all of this as an experiment, calling the tab its “test kitchen.” It says members’ use and feedback will help decide which features to keep or improve, and that some may “make their way into the main Netflix experience.” So what a member sees in the tab may change, and may never reach the rest of the service.
